Silver Valley Civitan Club celebrates 65th anniversary with $6,500 in contributions

The Silver Valley Civitan Club has, or will soon, distribute $6,500 in service funds as a part of its 65th Charter Anniversary
and Civitan Awareness Month celebrations.
The club was founded April 25, 1959 with the principal
purpose of founding a volunteer fire department for the community.
The club’s
signature service project is Civitan Project Santa which has been conducted for 57 consecutive years.
On May 24 the club will present the recipients of the Silver Valley Civitan Memorial Scholarships to graduating seniors
at South Davidson High School. The two $1,500 grants bring the total to $73,200 since 1989. Seventy-three students will have
then received scholarships since the first graduating class in 1989.
Principal Chris Adams
accepted a contribution of $1,000 to the Southern Sixty fund for athletics at South Davidson Middle & High School. The
Civitan club has donated more than $67,700 to SDHS athletics since 1988. Adams also received $300 for Exceptional Classes
at the school.
Principal Dr. Crystal Sexton was present to accept two donations for Silver
Valley Elementary School. A contribution of $500 for general school needs and $300 for Exceptional Classes were presented.
The Workshop of Davidson, Inc. received a $400 contribution for its operations. Five representatives from the
Workshop group homes attended the gathering with Anna Louvet accepting the donation. The others attending were Jamie Adams,
Kim Mahan, Faye Simmons and Tina Carter.
Special Olympics North Carolina and Special Olympics
Davidson County each received $300. The Civitan International Research Center, the flagship project of Civitan, received $100.
The Boys’ & Girls’ Home of NC, Inc. located at Lake Waccamaw, NC received of $300.
Five representatives of the club were volunteers at the 47th Special Olympics Davidson County Spring Games
held April 19 at South Davidson High School. The Silver Valley Civitan Club has continuously supported Special Olympics since
1978.
Program and entertainment was provided by Adam Prior, a Scottish bagpiper. A member
of the Stewart Clan, Prior attended the North Carolina Highland Games two years ago and was hooked. He has been studying the
pipes since.
Recent programs in March and April have included a visit by the mobile medical
van of Davidson Medical Ministries
presented by Janise Hurley, Davidson County Woodcarvers Charles
Mabry and Christian Palmer, and Christopher Gillespie of Family Services.
Fund raising efforts
continue with a hamburger steak supper set for Saturday, May 4, 4 until 7 PM, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Tickets
are $12 each and may be purchased from any Civitan member including Harold Parrish (336-239-4941).
The worldwide mission of Civitan International is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs
dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with different developmental abilities.
The Civitan tagline is ‘Champions of Service.’
The club typically meets the
second and fourth Monday each month at New Jerusalem Reformed Church at 7 p.m. Nineteen people attended the recent celebration.
