TEACHER’S SCHOLARSHPS

Davidson County Board of Commissioners’ Chair Karen Watford has announced that applications for Davidson County Teaching Scholarships will be accepted September 1st through November 15th, 2021.   Applications for these scholarships are available to college students who have lived in Davidson County for six years prior to entering college and have graduated from a high school, private school, or home school.  Applicants must be accepted into or enrolled in and attending a post-secondary institution at the time the scholarship is awarded and have at least a 2.8 GPA and will be required to obtain a North Carolina teaching certification by the beginning of the school year following the senior year of college.  Scholarships are for $5,000 each and require a three-year contract either with one of the three school systems located in Davidson County or an approved private school located in Davidson County.  Applications and guidelines for the scholarships have been made available at the local high schools and colleges in the Davidson County area, Chambers of Commerce, and the Davidson County Manager’s Office and the Internet at www.co.davidson.nc.us.

Notice is hereby given that a Public Hearing will be held by the Board of Commissioners of Davidson County on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021 at 6:00pm in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room, Governmental Center, 913 Greensboro Street in Lexington, North Carolina for the following zoning item:

ITEM #1: Request by Rebecca M. Yates, Member-Manager of Heritage Holdings Group, LLC to rezone property located in Lexington Township, Tax Map 325, Lot 95 containing 8.98 acres more or less. TOBACCO RESEARCH REFERENDUM ANNOUNCEMENT

The North Carolina Tobacco Research Referendum will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021.  Troy Coggins, Davidson County Extension Director, said a polling place has been established in Davidson County,   at the Davidson County Agriculture Center, in the Cooperative Extension Administrative Office Suite.  The Facility is located at 301 E. Center Street, Lexington NC, 27292.

The referendum is being held to let tobacco growers decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program.  This program has been in place since 1991, and the law requires that a new referendum be held every six years.   A 2/3 favorable vote will mean that growers are willing to continue to assess themselves to support tobacco research and education.  The assessment is ten cents per hundred pounds of tobacco produced in North Carolina.

The funds, about $250,000 annually, are collected at buying stations by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and then allocated by the Tobacco Research Commission to research and extension projects for tobacco at NC State University.
