Local Students Attend Bernard H. Thomas Student Leadership Academy
Four local students representing Denton Elementary School were nominated, selected, and attended the Bernard H. Thomas Student Leadership Academy at Davidson County Community College during the week of June 22 - 26, 2009. The local students attending and representing Denton Elementary School were: Emily Jacobs, London Hayes, Sydney Holt, and Sydney Honeycutt. They were among 50 rising 5th and 6th graders and 50 rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders selected from Davidson County Schools. Students were selected based on their application form and the recommendation of their teachers.
Various activities during the week included completion of the “Ropes Course,” a team-building activity at Baptist Children’s Home of N.C., career exploration and development sessions, a visit to the Pastor’s Pantry, a presentation by Mike Helsabeck a local artist, and an on-site lecture/demonstration by personnel at Old Dominion Freight Line, the 2009 Leadership Academy sponsor, working in collaboration with the Davidson County Educational Foundation. The Davidson County Education Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer organization established to benefit the students of the Davidson County Schools.
The Bernard H. Thomas Student Leadership Academy offers students within the Davidson County School System an opportunity to develop and use leadership skills during an exciting week of special classes and projects. Academy leaders emphasize skill development in the areas of self-awareness, listening, speaking, writing, team building, decision-making, problem solving, goal-setting and conflict resolution. Academy graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in the individual schools and communities. The week culminated with commencement exercises when the Foundation presented leadership certificates to each student.
