Bethel Baptist Church
Bethel Baptist Church will host Vacation Bible School on Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presentation and hotdogs will follow from 4 to 6 p.m.

This year’s VBS is themed “Operation Space: A Close Encounter with God’s Word” - Published by Answers in Genesis. Questions to be answered include: How did the universe begin? Did meteorites kill the dinosaurs? How has the Bible impacted Earth?

Bethel Baptist’s Middle & High School Youth will visit the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky July 17-18. This trip will enhance the Youth Group’s study in the Book of Genesis. While in the Cincinnati area, they will catch a Cincinnati Red’s Ball Game.

Bethel Baptist Church is located on Klopman Mill Road just off Highway 109 South.

High Rock Community Church

High Rock Community Church will host Youth Night on July 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. Activities will include games, food, crafts and fun for ages 5-15.

HRCC is located on Highway 109 South in Denton.

New Jerusalem UCC

New Jerusalem United Church of Christ will hold Vacation Bible School on Friday, July 11 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, July 12 from 11 – 3 p.m. This is will be an action packed weekend as we climb onboard the Jesus Express.

VBS is open to anyone age 2 and up. Supper will be provided on Friday, and lunch will be provided on Saturday.

James R. Bowen
Mr. James Ray Bowen, age 69 of Frank Road, Denton died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Bowen was born July 6, 1939 in Delbarton, West Virginia to Wade and Susie Brown Bowen. He served in the U. S.
Marine Corps and the U. S. Air Force, and was a member of the Marine Corps League in Lexington. He had worked at Burlington Industries.

Mr. Bowen is survived by his significant partner, Viller Massey of the home; daughter, Lora Maree of York, South Carolina; step-sons, Jimmy Massey, Jackie Massey and Jerry Massey of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Johnnie Massey of Shallotte; step-daughters, June Adkins of Denton, Jennifer Hardy of Lexington and Julia Sutliff of Troutville, Virginia; fourteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service for Mr. Bowen will be at 12:30 pm Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Vern Peterson officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm in Salisbury National Cemetery with Military Honors.

Carrie Coble
Carrie Tysinger Coble, 82, of Thomasville died Monday, June 22, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.

Mrs. Coble was born May 23, 1927 in Guilford County, a daughter of the late Oscar W. and Nettie Sykes Tysinger. She had worked at Burlington Mills and was a member of Blessings Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Coble; a brother, Oscar W. Tysinger, Jr.; a sister, Georgia Meindl; and a son, Wayne (Peanut) Coble.

Surviving is her daughter, Debra Williams of Denton; son, Tony Lee Coble of High Point; sisters, Louise Eads and Nona Wood, both of High Point; brothers, J.P. Tysinger and Phillip Lee Tysinger, both of High Point and Floyd Ray Tysinger of Dillon, SC; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 25, 2009 at Blessings Baptist Church in Thomasville with Pastor Ronnie Kendrick officiating. Interment followed in the Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point.

Lucille Mickey
Mrs. Lucille Ragan Mickey “Mammaw”, 83, of High Point died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Hospice Home of High Point.

Mrs. Mickey was born in Thomasville on April 19, 1926 to the late Vada Saintsing Ragan and Henry Vonnie Ragan. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Mickey.

Survivors are her son, Ronnie Scarborough of Mt. Gilead; sister, Evelyn Lowman of Valdese; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private graveside family service was held on Monday, June 29, 2009 at Floral Garden Park Cemetery with Dr. Joe D. Coltrane officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorials be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27262.

Juha (John) Nopanen
John Nopanen passed away peacefully at home in Niceville, Florida on Monday, June 22, 2009, at age 62 after a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 14, 1946, in Kymi, Finland and was a longtime resident of Niceville, Florida. John graduated from the Lowell Technological Institute in 1968 and was commissioned in the Air Force. He entered Civil Service in 1973, and worked at Eglin AFB from 1977 – 2003. John had a passion for traveling and traveled all over the world, and loved living close to the ocean. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan since childhood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton Nopanen and Anna Karin Suntio, and stepmother Ethel Haapanen.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Nopanen of Niceville, Florida; brother, Esko Nopanen and sister-in-law Adalyn of Denton; nephews, David Nopanen and Aron Nopanen; nieces, Gail Hageman and Crissie Cabrera; and eight great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Monday, June 29, 2009 in Florida.
